A divorce decree does not alter a contract with your lender or change the entry on your credit report. A judge may have ruled that your ex-spouse is responsible for making payments on the mortgage, or the car loan but you are still responsible for the debt. Removing your name from the loan is only possible if your ex-spouse is able to qualify or refinance the loan in there name only. In some cases an assumption of the loan may be possible, but they still need to prove that they're able to repay the debt on there own. If they're unable to qualify, the lender does not have to release you from the joint contract, and the mortgage or auto account will remain on your credit report.
